Wide Person-Affecting Views and Longtermism
Keywords:
longtermism, population ethics, person-affecting views, impersonal viewsAbstract
The purpose of this article is to argue that wide person-affecting views are compatible with the defense of longtermism. To this end, I will first explain the basis of longtermism, that is, the view that we should be primarily concerned about the impact that our actions will have in the far future. Second, I will describe and compare the different positions that exist in population ethics. Next, I will point out the problematicity of narrow person-affecting views. Finally, I will evaluate wide person-affecting views in relation to longtermism and conclude that they may constitute a position that is not only valid, but useful, for those concerned with the long-term future.
